“Here’s The National Consensus on Oral Care During Pregnancy…”

by Dr. Max Zaslavsky

The American Dental Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently released a national consensus statement on oral care during pregnancy.

It emphasized that changes to your body when you’re pregnant can make your gums sore or puffy and can make them bleed.  If not treated, it may lead to more serious periodontal disease.  It pointed out that oral health care, including use of x-rays, pain medication, and local anesthesia is safe during pregnancy.

It also provided guidance on what medications can be used during pregnancy.  It pointed out that aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen should be avoided in the first and third trimesters.  Tylenol and narcotics may be used. Amoxicillin, cephalosporins, clindamycin and metronidazole may be used but ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin (Biaxin) and tetracycline should be avoided during pregnancy.  It said that local anesthetics with epinephrine may be used during pregnancy.  Over the counter mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride may be used during pregnancy but only the alcohol free products.

These are the highlights of the consensus statement.  If you would like a copy of the complete report, you can download the attachment below. Page 7 has a good table listing drugs safe to use during pregnancy and what to avoid. ConsensusStatement_071912.pdf
